2010 FIFA World Cup Teams: Greece

Greece will be playing in their 2nd FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa in 2010. Their last appearance was in 1994 at the FIFA World Cup tournament (which was held in the United States in that year). They were knocked out in the first round of the tournament though. Greece have also played in 1 FIFA Confederations Cup tournament. They were knocked out in the first round of the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup which was held in Germany. Greece have also played in 3 European Championships. They won the European Championship tournament in 2004 (which was hosted by Portugal).

Greece are currently ranked at number 12 on the FIFA rankings. Otto Rehhagel (from Germany) is the current head coach of the Greek national football team. He took over from Vassilis Daniill in 2001. Giorgos Karagounis is the current captain of the Greek national football team. He plays his club football for Panathinaikos in Athens. He’s played for his country since 1999. He’s appeared in 91 matches for Greece so far. Theodoros Zagorakis is the most capped Greek footballer in history. He played in 120 matches for his country between 1994 and 2007. Nikos Anastopoulos is the top scoring Greek footballer in history. He scored 29 goals for Greece in 74 matches between 1977 and 1988.

Greece have been drawn into group B of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. They will be facing South Korea, Argentina and Nigeria in their group matches:

 

  • 12 June 2010 – Greece vs South Korea @ Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth – Kickoff at 16:00
  • 17 June 2010 – Greece vs Nigeria @ Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein – Kickoff at 16:00
  • 22 June 2010 – Greece vs Argentina @ Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane – Kickoff at 20:30
