Paraguay are currently ranked at number 29 on the FIFA rankings. Paraguay will make their 9th appearance in a FIFA World Cup tournament this year. They were one of the teams that competed in the inaugural FIFA World Cup tournament in 1930. Paraguay have reached the 2nd round of the FIFA World Cup on 3 occasions, in 1986 (in Mexico), in 1998 (in France) and in 2002 (when the tournament was hosted by South Korea & Japan). Paraguay have also competed in 33 Copa America tournaments. They’ve won the Copa America 2 times, in 1953 and 1979.

Denis Caniza is the current captain of the Paraguay national football team. He’s played for his country since 1996. So far he’s played in 95 matches for his country. He’s current playing football for the Leon club in Mexico. Carlos Gamarra is the most capped played in Paraguay football history. He played in 110 matches for his country between 1993 and 2006. He scored 12 goals in his international career. José Cardozo is the top scoring Paraguay footballer in history. He scored 25 goals for his country in 83 matches between 1991 and 2006.
Paraguay played its first football international against Argentina in 1919. In 1949 Paraguay beat Bolivia by 7 goals to 0, their biggest win in history. In 1926 Paraguay lost by 8 goals to 0 in a match played against Argentina, their biggest loss in footballing history.
