2010 FIFA World Cup Teams: Switzerland

Switzerland is currently ranked at #15 on the FIFA rankings. They will play in their 9th FIFA World Cup this year. Switzerland have reached the Quarter final stage of the FIFA World Cup 3 times in history, in 1934, 1938 and 1954.

Switzerland have also appeared in 3 European Championships over the years (the first in 1996). Switzerland co-hosted the European Championships with Austria. Ottmar Hitzfeld (from Germany) is the current coach of the Swiss National Football team (since 2008). Heinz Hermann is the most capped player in Swiss football history. He represented his country 117 times between 1978 and 1991. Alexander Frei is the top scoring Swiss football player in history, he’s scored 40 goals for Switzerland in 71 games from 2001 and is still currently active.

Switzerland set a record in 2006 at the FIFA World Cup in Germany for being the first team in history to be eliminated from the competition without conceding a goal against them. They lost against the Ukraine in a penalty shootout which knocked them out of the competition. The Swiss Football Association was founded in 1895.

It would be wise not to underestimate Switzerland in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Switzerland will play in the following group matches in this year’s tournament in South Africa:

  • Switzerland vs Spain – 16 June 2010 @ Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban – Kickoff at 16:00
