This past weekend the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup entered its Quarter Final stage. There were 8 nations that made it into this stage of the tournament by ending in the top 2 positions in their respective pools. There weer 20 nations that started the tournament and now we are down to four teams. In the next couple of weeks we will see who will be number one?
In the first quarter final match on Saturday, Wales took on Ireland at the Regional Stadium in Wellington. Most folks expected Ireland to win this match (because the Irish had beaten Australia in one of their group matches). Wales proved to be too strong for the Irish though, beating them by 22 points to 10. In the second quarter final of the day, England took on France at Eden Park in Auckland. More than 49,000 people attended the match. The French proved to be too strong for the English, beating them by 19 points to 12.
In the 3rd quarter final match of the weekend on Sunday, South Africa took on Australia the Regional Stadium in Wellington. South Africa were the favorites for the match. Despite having most of the possesion, and being the best team on the field South Africa narrowly lost the match by 11 points to 9. Some critics and Springbok fans have blamed New Zealand referee Bryce Lawrence for not being consistent with some of his decisions in the match. He disallowed a Springbok try which could have changed the course of the match. This loss means that South Africa will not have the opportunity to defend their 2007 IRB Rugby World Cup title. In the 4th quarter final match of the weekend, New Zealand took on Argentina at Eden Park. The Argentinians played their hearts out, but could not stop the All Blacks in the end. They lost the match by 33 points to 10.
The 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup now enters its semi-final stage. On Saturday France will take on Wales and Australia will face New Zealand on Sunday. Both matches will be played at Eden Park in Auckland.
