300: Rise of an Empire coming in 2014!

Remember 2007? Remember people using the phrase “This is Sparta!” at some of the braais you went to back then? Remember the epic film 300? Well, if you enjoyed that particular piece of cinematic mastery I’ve got some great news for you: the film’s sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire is coming to a cinema near you in 2014.

300: Rise of an Empire tells the epic story of the Greek general Themistocles battling an invading army of Persians under Xerxes. The film takes place before, during and after the events of the first film. The Persian army is marching South towards the Greek city states. The Democratic city of Athens (the first city on the army’s path) bases its strength on its fleet (which is led by Themistocles). Themistocles is forced to form an unwilling alliance with Sparta (a traditional rival of Athens) to battle the massive army of Xerxes.

The film will feature appearances by Lena Headey (who you may recognize from television’s Game of Thrones and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Eva Green (who is also cast in the upcoming Sin City sequel), Rodrigo Santoro (who also appeared in The Last Stand earlier this year), Sullivan Stapleton, David Wenham, Jack O’Connell, Caitlin Carmichael, Nancy McCrumb, Hans Matheson and various others.

The film is directed by Israeli director Noam Murro and the script was written by Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder. Snyder directed the first 300 film and was also the man in the directors chairs for films like Man of Steel (2013), Sucker Punch (2011) and Watchmen (2009). 300: Rise of an Empire is a huge production involving many people and I would not be surprised if the film’s budget exceeds $300 million.

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures released the first trailer for the film a few days ago. 300: Rise of an Empire looks like it’s also going to be jam packed with awesome special effects and well choreographed fighting sequences. It’s already one of the most anticipated films of 2014. Check out the trailer below, you may just agree with me

Feeling excited yet? Well, you’ll have to wait until about March 2014, that’s when this film is going to be released in the United States. No release dates have been confirmed for South African cinemas yet, but keep your eyes open for updates from Nu Metro and Ster-Kinekor.
