Johannesburg has a reputation as the most bustling metropolis in South Africa, but there’s actually a chilled out side to this city as well. People forget that even though more than 3.6 million people live in Jozi, the city is still the biggest man made forest in the world (with more than 10 million trees).
Today I’m showcasing the chilled out side of Johannesburg as part of a series. I recently featured 4 Saturday morning markets worth checking out in Pretoria and today it’s Johannesburg’s turn – here are 4 markets worth checking out in the city of gold.
Bryanston Organic and Natural Market: The focus of this Johannesburg market is on quality hand crafted goods, unique art and photography, clothing made from natural fibers, a deli with delicious foods and fresh organic and naturally grown produce. There are also five eateries on site: The Photosynthesis Tea Garden, Cami’s Pancakes, The Coffee Bean Gelateria, Bettina’s Coffee Shop and the Pizza Place. Visitors are invited to relax, listen to some live music and indulge themselves in delicious muffins, light meals, fresh coffee and herb teas.
This market has been established for more than 36 years and runs every week from Thursday and on Sunday. It’s open from 9 AM to 3 PM on those two days. The is located in Curloss Road off Main Road. Jozi Food Market: This stunning market features a mixture of culture and gourmet. The market has a huge variety of food vendors and is held every Saturday at the Pirates Sports Club in Parkhurst. Jozi Food market features stalls who sell all kinds of bread, cupcakes, curries, Thai food, organic fruit and vegetables, nuts, cheese, chilli sauces, breakfast wraps, mushrooms and a whole lot more. You are guaranteed to find something that will tantalize your taste buds.
The market is open from 8:30 AM to 1 PM. The market’s great outdoor venue is perfect for the whole family. Kids can play on the jumping castle or on the grass. Pirates pub sells a variety of drinks and you’re also welcome to catch the latest sporting action on the television at the clubhouse. Chef & the Fat Man Market: This market is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM. The Chef & the Fat Man market offer lots of entertainment for the kids, jumping castles, great food from their restaurant, live entertainment and a tea / beer garden. Visitors can also browse the stalls for great gifts, cakes, pickles, sweets and more.

Hillfox Market: This market is one of the West Rand’s premier shopping entertainment venues. It’s open every Saturday and Sunday and on public holidays from 9 AM to 5 PM. The venue is located at the Hillfox Value Center in Hendrik Potgieter Drive.
The Hillfox market features more than 250 undercover stalls and is ideal for the whole family. There’s dedicated entertainment for children, free concerts on Sundays featuring top local artists, an awesome food court and a lot of bargains.

A new market has recently opened in the North-Eastern suburb of Linksfield in Johannesburg.
It is open on Sundays from 9am-4pm.
The market is called the Huddle Park Village Market and is a real and true fun day on Sundays.
It has the feel of a day out in the country and has a great family atmosphere about it, with plenty of activities and stalls for the little ones and a very big dog culture too.
