47 Ronin is an upcoming fantasy action film. The film is a fictional account, but is based on the real-life story of a small band of 18th Century Japanese samurai who take on an entire army. In the film these Ronin (who have been banished from their homeland) embark on a journey to avenge the death of their master. Kai (an outcast played by Keanu Reeves) joins the group (who is led by Kuranosuke Oishi) and assists them to fight challenges that would defeat most warriors.
Besides Reeves, the film will also feature appearances by Tadanobu Asano (Lord Kira), Rinko Kikuchi (Mizuki), Hiroyuki Sanada (Kuranosuke Oishi), Kou Shibasaki (Mika), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (the Shogun), Jin Akanishi (Chikara Oishi) and Rick Genest (Savage). 47 Ronin is directed by rookie director Carl Erik Rinsch (who has previously directed three short films) and written by Keanu Reeves, Rinko Kikuchi, Tadanobu Asano and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film is rumored to have a budget of $175 million. The film is scheduled for release in December 2013 in the United States. No release date has been announced for Ster-Kinekor or Nu Metro theatres in South Africa yet.
It’s the first time in film history that the tale of the forty seven Ronin has been adapted by Hollywood. There have been six other adaptations to date. According to Keanu Reeves the filming was first done in Japanese and then done in English. This was done for the sake of the supporting cast. The arrows for 47 Ronin were made a famous arrow maker in Europe and some museum quality arrows were made for close-up shots. Lesser known Japanese actors were also chosen for the film to make it seem more authentic.
Some may say that the trailer for 47 Ronin gives away too much, but it’s still absolutely spectacular and features amazing visual effects, dragons, fight sequences and more. Let’s hope that it lives up to expectations. Don’t take my word for it though, judge for yourself by checking out the trailer below:
