8 Awesome Photos from 2012

Great news! The Mayan apocalypse did not happen and 2013 is around the corner! It’s hard to believe that the end of 2012 is only 10 days from now. It almost feels that it was the 1st of January yesterday. Like every other year, there have been some really awesome photos from 2012 and today I will be showcasing some of them.

Photography is probably the best way to capture memories, spectacular landscapes and history. Thanks to cheaper technology, photography has become one of the most popular hobbies globally lately. No wonder the popular photo sharing application Instagram has more than 100 million users and that more than 300 million photos are uploaded to Facebook daily. Fact is: the human race loves photos.

Check out this list of 8 Awesome Photos from 2012. I’m pretty sure that you’re going to be awed by them, so brace yourself.

In the first photo below a seasonal winter storms lashes a boat at anchor off the Sea Point promenade in Cape Town. The Cape Peninsula has long been known as the “Cape of Storms” among sailors whose wrecked vessels have been scattered along the coastline at the southern tip of Africa for 400 years. This photo was taken by Mike Hutchings for Reuters. This photo definitely belongs on this Awesome Photo from 2012 list.

In this photo, which was taken at Whitehorse in the Yukon territory in Canada swirls of green and red appears in aurora. Aurora are caused by the interaction of a coronal mass ejection (or CME) from the sun with earth’s magnetosphere. Auroras like these appear at many points near the earth’s poles. Another awesome photo from 2012.

This photo was taken near Searchlight, Nevada in the United States in July this year. In the photo a double rainbow appears after heavy storms pass over. This is not something that you see every day. This photo was taken by Gene Blevins and published by Reuters.

In this photo the Space Shuttle Enterprise is carried by a barge underneath a bridge in New York City in June this year. The Space Shuttle Enterprise was on it’s way to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum where it was put on permanent display for the public. The Space Shuttle program was discontinued in 2011 by NASA. The program involved 135 space flights by Space Shuttles from 1981.

This awesome photo was taken by Michael Zelensky. It shows the entrance to a snow tunnel in Russia. The tunnel was over 1 km long. It was located under snow fields in a deep ravine. The tunnel was located close to the Mutnovsky Volcano. The person holding the torch adds a nice touch to the photo. They definitely help to illuminate the awesome texture of the snow tunnel. This photo is absolutely awesome.

Our next photo is entitled “World’s Edge”. It was taken on the Southern Coast of the United Kingdom at a place called Beachy Head. It’s close to the town of Eastbourne in East Sussex.  This cliff is the highest chalk sea cliff in whole of Britain. It rises 162 meters above sea level. The peak  offers stunning views of South East coast. Rhys Davies took this photo earlier this year. It’s definitely worth of being in this 8 Awesome From 2012 list.

Beachy Head

Golden Gate Bridge is located in San Francisco, California in the United States. It’s one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and has made its appearance in numerous TV shows and movies over the years. In this photo by Indranil Mukhopadhyay a huge cargo ship passes underneath the bridge. The fog was so dense that both the ship and the bridge are hidden underneath it and almost appears lost. This was actually  photographed after sunset.

Sydney, Australia has become world renowned for their New Year’s Eve fireworks displays. Fireworks explode in Sydney Harbour to greet the new year. It’s one of the most spectacular displays of fireworks in the world. Daniel Munoz captured this scene in Sydney on the 1st of January 2012 and it’s definitely one of the most awesome photos that I’ve seen.
