A List of the Top 5 Scary Movies

With winter here it’s getting harder and harder to leave the house for entertainment. One way of dealing with the cold is in house entertainment. Staying at home and settling in, in front of the TV and the DVD player. Body heat is the best way to beat the winter chills, and there’s nothing better than a few scary movies to get the cuddling going faster. If you don’t know where to start, we are here to help with our list of top five scary movies of all time.

Nightmare on Elm Street

A classic scary movie that has sent chills down many a spine. What made these movies such fun to watch was the antagonist Freddy Krueger. Freddy has a personality that is both scary and freakishly entertaining at the same time. Also look out for a young Johnny Depp. Wes Craven is known for his scary movies, like Scream, and this was one of his first classics.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Nightmare on Elm Street spawned a slew of sequels. So if you just can’t get enough of Freddy Krueger and his twisted sense of humour, there are loads more to follow.

No doubt one of the greatest movies in grindhouse entertainment and in our opinion unmatched by any of the sequels or remakes. This story of a bunch of teenagers on a road trip who end up being attacked by a family of cannibals, one of which likes to wear human skin masks and know his way around a chainsaw, is very loosely based on the serial killer Ed Gein.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has a twist around every corner. Leatherface (the mask wearing, chainsaw wielding psycho) and his family are scary for what ties them together: Their love of murder and human flesh.

The Thing

The Thing is filled with testosterone; there are no females in this movie. A group of researchers based in Antarctica come across a defrosted alien and this alien is mad, very mad. The Thing can transform himself into a copy of any person, just a pity he has to eat you first.

Yes The Thing is gross and when this scary movie first came out in 1982 we had not seen anything like it. But Kurt Russel preforms his role in the movie like the genius actor he is. This is a must see scary movie for the ending is great!

Alien

Alien is by far theleader scary movie out of our top 5. When Alien hit cinemas in 1979 it put director Ridley Scott and lead actress Sigourney Weaver on the silver screen map for ever. There are two major reveals in the movie – one involving how the alien creaturegestates in a host and the other involving a crew member who isn’t who he appears to be. When our crew member finally does reveal himself it’s as crazy as seeing an alien baby pop out of somebody’s chest.

The intense flashes of the alien set this apart from any other scary movie you will ever see. This scary movie sets the trend for “how to do scary movies” for years to come. If there is one scary movie you have to see before you die, it’s Alien.

Dawn of the Dead

Dawn of the Deadis considered by some as the daddy of all zombie movies. If you are a fan of zombie movies you have no doubt seen Dawn of the Dead before. If you haven’t you should, it is zombie apocalypse 101. With an ever growing epidemic of zombies two SWAT members, a traffic reporter and the traffic reporter’s girlfriend try and hide from the zombies in a shopping mall.

With George A. Romero in the directors seat Dawn of the Dead is a suspense filled ride that made zombies scary way before it was cool to make zombie movies. This is one zombie movie that should be on you “50 movies to see before you die” list. If you can’t get enough of the zombie suspense then Night of the Living Dead might also be for you.

Plenty of chills and thrills to get you through those cold winter nights. If you have any suggestions on scary movies we might have missed or if you want to suggest another Top 5 please leave a comment.
