There are some really interesting films coming out later in 2013 and After Earth definitely looks like one of those. The film is scheduled for release in the United States in May. It should be on circuit in South Africa at Nu Metro or Ster Kinekor cinemas around the same time.
After Earth is an action / science fiction / adventure film starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith in the lead roles. A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth. The story plays off 1,000 years after events forced humanity to escape the planet. Cypher (Will Smith) is injured and Kitai (Jaden Smith) must undertake a dangerous journey to signal for help.
The movie is directed by M. Night Shyamalan. You may remember him as the director of The Happening, Unbreakable, Signs, The Sixth Sense and The Village. You can also expect a cameo appearance by him in the film. He’s got a reputation for playing tiny roles in the films he directs (much like Quentin Tarantino and Wes Craven). Shyamalan is also the co-writer and co-producer of After Earth. The film has a rumored budget of $130 million.
I’m pretty curious to see how After Earth is going to be. On the one hand I’m expecting an action-packed science fiction film, but on the other I’m expecting something a little less action and more science fiction.
Besides the Smith’s After Earth also features appearances by Zoë Kravitz (who you may remember from 2011’s X Men: First Class and 2010’s It’s a Kinda Funny Story), Isabelle Fuhrman (who starred in 2012’s The Hunger Games), Kristofer Hivju , David Denman, Glenn Morshower (who you may recognize from various television shows), Lincoln Lewis and others.
Judging by the Movie Trailer below After Earth will feature some awesome special effects. It reminds me a little of 2009’s Avatar. It has the potential to be one of the best films of 2013. Don’t take my word for it though, judge for yourself.
What do you think of After Earth? Do you think that this could be one of the best films of the year OR do you give this film a huge thumbs down? Leave a comment and let me know.
