All About The Cape Town Jazz Festival 2016
Referred to as “Africa’s Grandest Gathering”, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival celebrates its 17th year in 2016 and always promises to deliver a line-up of artists that will inspire most of us to try out our own musical talents and find musical instruments for sale.
An event that is (very) proudly (and very uniquely) South African produced, is hosted at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on the 1st and 2nd of April, 2016.
With over 40 artists, both South African and International, strutting their stuff on five stages, this musical festival, welcoming an estimated 37 000 people over the weekend, is a gathering for all jazz lovers, young and old.
Performing Artists at the Cape Town Jazz Festival 2016
Some of the South African artists you can expect to see at this year’s festival include artists like Dr. Victor and The Rasta Rebels, Topdog, Cameron Ward and Thandi Ntuli. Other talented South African stars that will also be showing off their talents with musical instruments include Mafikizolo featuring Tsepo Tshola, Tribute ‘Birdie’ Mboweni, Derek Gripper, Beat Bangaz, Topdog and Driemanskap.

In terms of international artists, the talent is just as robust with artists like Eddie Parker, Angie Stone, Lizz Wright, Mark Turner and Meshell Ndegeocello. You can also expect to see performances by George Brooks, SWV, Victor Wooten, Cassandra Wilson and Sheila E., to name but a handful of artists.

The Free Community Concert
Taking place on the 30th of March, 2016, the Free Community Concert starts at 17:00 in the Greenmarket Square. A pre-festival concert which has been around since the start of the Cape Town Jazz Festival, it is meant as a thank you to the people of Cape Town, drawing thousands of people into the heart of the city.
Duotone Photographic Exhibition
Spanning from the 29th of March, 2016, until the 2nd of April, 2016, the Duotone Photographic Exhibition is held at the Duotone Gallery and puts on display the work of both amateurs as well as professionals. Capturing what is referred to as “jazz in motion”, this exhibition has also been around for a while now, in the past showcasing work from artists like Mike Mzeleni, George Hallett and Basil Breakey, to name but a few examples.
Also on display at this exhibition will be the work from photographers that took part in the Jazz Photography Workshop.
Fashion & All That Jazz Gala Dinner
With a collaboration between the Cape Town Fashion Festival and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, the Fashion & All That Jazz Gala Dinner is a yearly event not to be missed. Closely working with WEAR SA, this Gala Dinner is a glamorous event showcasing some of South Africa’s best emerging designers and talents.
There is also a Golf Day – Golf with a Cause – which is attended by invitation only.
Cape Town Jazz Festival Tickets and Times
Taking place from Friday, the 1st of April, to Saturday, the 2nd of April, the Cape Town Jazz Festival Tickets start at R 590 (for a day pass) and goes up to R 895 (for a weekend pass). Do note however that the Weekend Pass tickets have been sold out.
