Some benefits of replacing your own car parts

You can save money by learning how to do some simple repair and maintenance tasks yourself. From replacing car parts to changing air filters, there are numerous ways to save some cash. Owning a car can be expensive but knowing how to fix and replace certain things yourself can help to decrease costs. Buying second hand car parts reduces your costs even further.

Replacing faulty auto parts with used parts yourself is an environmentally friendly option. Thousands of good quality parts are discarded which has a negative impact on the environment. You can help to recycle and save money by reusing these parts.

You can find a wide selection of used parts for older vehicles. Doing your own repair work is an opportunity to learn something new and to develop your skills. Finding a trustworthy mechanic can be difficult but when you do the work yourself, you know exactly what is happening with your vehicle.

DIY Car Repair Tips

Before you start, make sure that you have the right tools. While some tasks require specific tools, others can be completed without any additional help. Safety is another important consideration. Don’t try to fix your car immediately after it has been running. This is important advice as the pipes and fluids will still be hot.

Some basic tools include a car jack, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and a multimeter. Here are a few tasks that you can complete yourself to start off with:

Replacing the air filter

You will be surprised at how quick and easy it is to replace your air filter. Even if you don’t have any mechanical skills, this is an exceptionally simple task to complete. You don’t even need any tools to get the job done.

Your air filter should be replaced every year and it only takes approximately ten minutes. The first thing that you will need to do is take a look at the auto parts listing and buy a new filter. Next, locate your filter, which is situated in a black box beneath the vehicle’s hood. Open the casing and make a note of how the filter is arranged.

Take out the used filter and replace it with the new one. Don’t forget to secure the metal clips when you are finished.

Replace Damaged Head or Taillights

Replacing headlights that aren’t working is so simple that the only car spares it requires is bulbs. Driving without working headlights or taillights is dangerous, so it is best to fix the problem yourself immediately.

Check the make and model of your vehicle before purchasing a compatible bulb. Next you will need to push the lights out from the back of the housing. It is important to make sure that the car is switched off before you unplug the faulty bulb. Then all that you need to do is insert the new bulb.

Faulty Belts

Look for second hand car parts to find affordable belts that are still in good condition. You will know that your belt needs to be replaced if you hear a squeaky noise or if you notice cracks in the surface area of the belt.

This problem is typically easy to detect. Start by making a diagram of where the belt is currently positioned so that you can replicate it when you install the new one. Next, unfasten the belt from the tension arm with a ratchet.

Check that there isn’t any dirt or oil that would cause the belt to wear down faster. Finally, take a look at your diagram and set up the new belt. You will need to tighten the tension arm again.

Change Windscreen Wipers

Worn windscreen wipers can decrease your visibility when you are driving. In only 15 minutes you can change your windscreen wipers and be ready to go. While there are general steps to follow during the replacement process, it is important to check your owner’s manual as the steps differ between the various makes of cars.

Lift the blades and then take off the old ones. Look at how the blades are connected. Generally you will find a tab on the wiper which you can push to release the damaged blade. Set up the new blade without scratching the windscreen and check that it is secured tightly.

My Ford Ikon 2005 1.3 iLX speedometer is not working. I took it for a diagnostic test at a Bosch Service CENTrE. They quoted me speedometer sensor plus fitting. As my vehicle is classified as older than ten years and the agents are therefore selling parts cheaper to certain older car repair centres , where in Gauteng can I find this part at a lessor price??? Maybe I could fit it myself at no cost!!!

Thanks for this list. My father is new to fixing his car. He usually brings it to the shop. Since he retired, he retired doing it alone. However, he finds new car parts overrated so I think he’ll find second-hand car parts instead.
