Divergent: New Sci-fi film coming in 2014

Divergent is an upcoming sci-fi action film which tells the story of Beatrice Prior (a teenager with a special mind). She finds her life threatened when an authoritarian leader seeks to exterminate her kind in her effort to seize control of their divided society. She learns that she is Divergent (a person who does not fit into any one faction) and discovers a plot brewing in a society that is seemingly perfect. The film is based on the 2011 book of the same name by Veronica Roth.

Divergent is directed by American director Neil Burger (who also directed the 2006 film The Illusionist and the 2011 film Limitless). The film will feature appearances by Shailene Woodley (who has appeared in the 2011’s The Descendants), Theo James, Zoe Kravitz (who has appeared in 2010’s It’s Kind of a Funny Story, 2011’s X-Men: First Class and 2013’s After Earth), Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q (who has gained fame for her role in television’s Nikita), Jai Courtney and Kate Winslet (who needs no introduction). The screenplay for the film was written by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor.

It’s great that more and more science fiction films are being made nowadays. Some of you might disagree with me and will say that films in this genre are boring, but science fiction films and books encourages people to play around with ideas in their minds. The chances are very high that people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and other tech gurus of our time watched or read some form of science fiction and that it inspired them bring us things that make our lives easier like the Apple iPhone, Facebook and Microsoft Windows.

Divergent’s release date is said to be on the 21st of March 2014 in the United States. There has been no word from Nu Metro or Ster-Kinekor about  a release date for this film in South Africa yet.  It looks like the film is going to be suspense-filled and action-packed ride. Check out the trailer for the film below, if you don’t believe me.
