Earth Hour 2011

Earth Hour 2011 is scheduled to take place on Saturday the 26th of March at 8:30 PM. An estimated 1 billion people from all around the globe is expected to turn off their lights for 1 hour and stand together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing they have in common – the Earth.

The Earth Hour phenomena started in 2007 in Australia and has been growing in strength over the last few years. The idea of Earth Hour is to raise awareness of climate change issues and to remind the world’s leaders that they are given a a clear mandate to make the right decisions and to deliver a fair, effective and binding climate deal that keeps global warming below 2 degrees, not the disappointment that was the Copenhagen conference in December 2009.

Earth Hour is organized by the WWF. This organization’s mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and encourage people to live in harmony with nature. In 2010 Victoria Falls joined other world icons such as the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, Trevi Fountain, Sydney Opera House, Table Mountain, Christ the Redeemer Statue, Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building in Dubai) and stood in darkness for 1 hour for what is said to be the greatest global action on climate change ever witnessed.

In 2011, the participating TV channel in the Philippines, ABS-CBN will cease transmission during lights out and Cartoon Network will also halt transmissions during lights out.

You can join in. Switch off your lights this Saturday between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM and enjoy the wonderful night sounds, combine this with a candle lit dinner or look at the stars while you think about what contribution you can make towards reducing your own carbon footprint.
