Events in Gauteng – February / March 2011

Big Hole Festival, Cullinan: This event is held in Cullinan, Gauteng from the 18th of March to the 21st of March 2011. The unique village of Cullinan was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan and is famous for being the site of discovery of the world’s largest diamond, the legendary Cullinan (which weighed an incredible 3,106 carats), in 1905. People are generally not aware that Cullinan has the biggest mine hole in South Africa. The hole is actually 4 times the area of The Big Hole in Kimberley. The Kimberley Diamond Mine holds the (disputed) title of being the largest hand-dug hole in the world, where Cullinan hole was mechanically excavated. In September 2009 another large diamond was discovered. It weighed nearly 500 carats. The white diamond was the size of a chicken egg. With big things like this happening, it’s only natural to hold a festival like the Big Hole Festival (Groot Gat Fees) in Cullinan. Visitors are invited to enjoy a day in the historic town. Think antiques, cheese, wine and whiskey tasting, food stalls, a beer garden, a mechanical bull, rock climbing, children’s entertainment, music, stage, gospel and rock shows & more! The Big Hole Festival is hosted for the benefit of Cullinan Combined School.
