Events in Gauteng – October 2010

Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show: This event is held at the Sandton Convention Center from the 27th of October to the 31st of October 2010. The rich heritage of South Africa will be showcased at this event. This year’s event date in October marks 100 years since the then Union of South Africa printed its first stamp. 12 years have passed since the last international stamp convention was held in the country. The international stamp community has indicated their support of the exhibition. They have labelled it a not-to-be-missed event. The Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show is designed to cater for the entire family and also features a child-friendly activity area. Fun stamp-related activities are planned to keep children busy and inspire love for the hobby. The Philatelic Foundation of South Africa and the South African Post Office is sponsoring this year’s event. The event is also recognised by the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie, the international governing body for the hobby. Entrance to the event is free. Newtown Diwali Festival: This event is held on the 23rd of October 2010 at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg. More than 40,000 festival goers flocked to this festival in 2009. Preparations are underway for this year’s Newtown Diwali Festival. Festival goers can participate in a wide range of fun activities ranging from children’s art workshops, dance workshops, an esoteric fair, a textile and crafts fair, fashion shows, retail and food stores and a dazzling entertainment line-up which culminates in an exquisite fireworks display. The Newtown Diwali Festival is hosted by the City of Johannesburg and sponsored by Medal Paints. The festival has become an essential event on the Johannesburg’s cultural calendar.
