2010 South African Open Championship: Look skywards for an Eagle at the second oldest Golf open championship in the world. South Africa’s most prestigious golf championship celebrates 100 years at the Durban Country Club this December. The 2010 South African Open Championship is the second oldest sporting event in South Africa (after the Currie Cup Rugby trophy took place in 1893). The SA Open Championship has been won 13 times by Gary Player and has been staged a total of 99 times. Past winners of this event include Vijay Singh (in 1997), Ernie Els (in 1998 and 2007), David Frost (in 1999), Mathias Gronberg (in 2000), Mark McNulty (in 2001), Tim Clark (in 2002 and 2005), Trevor Immelman (in 2003 and 2004), Retief Goosen (in 2006) and others. The SA Open Champions is often regarded as the gateway to international golfing stardom. The event has produced a number of champions and is considered the breeding ground of South Africa’s golfing legends. Umhlanga Summer Carnival: This year this event features a line-up with 14 days of fun-filled beach events designed to encourage outdoor activities for young and old. The Umhlanga Summer Carnival is on from the 10th to the 23rd of December 2010 at Umhlanga Main Beach & Village in Durban. The event kicks off with the Lizzard Summer Surf Session organized by the KZN Surfing Association that takes place from the 10th to the 12th of December. Well known local surfers will be competing for the title and prize cheque. There will also be an amateur division for young, old, accomplished and social surfers to participate. The radical ‘Hooters Air Show’ will also be part of the event. The surfer that lands the best aerial walks away with a R5,000 cash prize. The public is welcome to participate in the Umhlanga Summer Carnival 16km Trail Run on the 19th of December (a first of its kind in Durban). Be geared up to trail through the Umhlanga coastal area for an invigorating sunrise outing starting at 6 AM at Breakers Resort. Entry forms are available from Umhlanga Tourism.
