Events in KZN – July 2010

Durban International Film Festival: The 31st edition of this event will take place from the 22nd of July until the 1st of August 2010. The Durban International Film Festival is organised by the Centre For Creative Arts (UKZN) with support by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (principal funder), National Film and Video Foundation, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism, HIVOS, City Of Durban, German Embassy, Goethe Institut, Industrial Development Corporation, Commonwealth Foundation, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture, and a range of other valued partners. Films will be presented in over 200 screenings at venues across Durban and in its surrounding communities. Alongside the screenings of films, the festival offers an extensive workshop and seminar program, as well as training and industry events. The festival will open with the world premiere of Khalo Matabane’s State Of Violence, a powerful tale of revenge, history and memory. Films from around the world will be screened. Special focus will be on films from South African and Africa.

The Durban Air Show: This event will be staged at Virginia Airport in Durban North on the 17th of July 2010. The 54th edition of the Durban Air Show will have over 45 acts. A plane will be taking off or landing every 7 minutes. SAP parachutists, civilian jets, the Silver Falcons, passenger airliners, skydivers and many other acts that will take place on the ground (involving aircraft) will be part of the show. Organisers have extended a VIP invitation to John Travolta (who is in South Africa at the moment). This aviation fanatic has flown his own Boeing 707 over to South Africa. The Durban Air Show will open with a parade and a tribute to Durban’s emergency, safety and security services assisted by major emergency role players. Gates open at 7 AM. The show starts at 10 AM and finishes at 4 PM on the day. Tickets for adults cost R90, tickets for children, pensioners and paraplegics are R40. More than 15,000 people are expected at this year’s show. For more information visit http://www.durbanairshow.co.za/ or phone 031 5647167.
