Events in KZN – June 2010

Escourt Polar Bear Swim: This annual event will be held at the The Dragon Peaks Dam in the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg (near Escourt) on the 21st of June 2010. This event is staged to raise funds for the Estcourt SPCA. Participants are required to brave the freezing waters of the dam by swimming from the shore to the Boma on “Bunny” Island. Participants have the choice of doing a 100 m route or a shorter 25 m course. Participants are not allowed to wear wetsuits. Certificates will be awarded to everyone who finishes. A number of prizes will also be up for grabs on the day. It costs only R30 to enter. This includes free soup / gluwein for participants (to help in the warming process). Proceeds will be donated to the Estcourt SPCA. Spectators are welcome and are encouraged to bring along some Tinned Pet Food, old blankets, etc. For more information regarding this event, contact Ann on 082 828 0401 or 036 468 1342.

Mallards & Mercury Ski-Boat Festival: This competition will be held from the 30th of June to the 3rd of July 2010. It has proven to be so successful that it is now one of the biggest ski-boat competitions in the country. It’s also the the biggest angling event by far on the Hibiscus Coast. The event attracts +/- 400 anglers and their families from all over the country and hundreds of tourists. A huge marquee is usually set up at St. Michaels beach where the weigh-in and all the action takes place. A fully equipped Mallards Cobra Cat 525 fitted with 2 x Mercury 75hp Motors on a galvanized trailer is the first prize for this competition. A vehicle sponsored by South Coast Chevrolet is the prize for the next biggest fish of another species! Many other fantastic prizes have also been secured. The Mallards & Mercury Ski-Boat Festival is held at Shelly Beach on the KZN South Coast. Contact Jackie Pratt on 083 6546922 for more information.
