Events in KZN – September / October 2010

JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience: This event is on in Durban from the 1st to the 12th of September 2010. For 12 days Durban will play host to a dazzling 12th edition of this international contemporary dance festival. The JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience is 1 of 4 annual festivals hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts. Over the years this event has become synonymous with cutting-edge dance theatre. Principle funding comes from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund. This bumper event contains a programme of broad scope and appeal. Special guests for this year’s event will include Johannesburg’s inimitable Moving Into Dance Mophatong who will grace the event with Sylvia Glasser’s award winning “Threads”. This work has been created in collaboration with poet Lebo Mashile and is a rare chance for Durbanites to witness this poet extraordinaire in action with one of South Africa ‘s premier contemporary dance companies, in a momentous fusion of dance and spoken word. Poetry AfricaPoetry Africa Festival: Poets (predominantly from South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent) will participate in this year’s 14th annual Poetry Africa international poetry festival in Durban. This event is on from the 4th to the 9th of October 2010. This extensive week-long programme includes performances, readings, music and book-launches (from Monday to Friday) at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The Durban SlamJam and festival finale will be held at the BAT Centre on Saturday the 9th of October. Day activities include seminars, workshops, open mic opportunities and school visits.
