Events in the Western Cape – August / September 2010

Hopefield Fynbos Show: More than 200 species from the renosterveld, sandveld, rietveld and wetland areas of the Hopefield district will be displayed in recreations of their natural habitats. Enjoy lunch or tea as well as stalls with a variety of traditional produce, a flower route and a fossil museum. The Fynbos Park opposite the sports grounds is in the process of being developed and provides a natural veld flower garden where the nature lover can wonder around at leisure. Other activities include a tractor ride through the veld and farmyard where various breeds of cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs and even wild pigs caught in the wetland area can be viewed.  Enjoy a traditional meal or pancakes and stroll through the stalls where local produce such as honey and “waterblommetjies” can be bought. Overberg Eco-Expo: This event is planned for the 3rd and 4th of September 2010. The mission of this expo is to educate and enlighten individuals and businesses on the increasing number of eco-friendly products and services available. It is to be a means to encourage people to become aware of the importance of preserving their environment for a more sustainable way of living and for a healthier planet. This event is being co-ordinated by the Bredasdorp / Napier Branch of the Botanical Society of South Africa. Visitors will be able to see dozens of green products and services that are currently available to meet their needs and learn about organizations helping to affect positive and sustainable change in the region, the country and the planet. Educational workshops and “how-to” sessions will also be available. Networking opportunities will abound for people looking to work together for change at the local, national, and global level. Speakers will be addressing a wide array of green topics, from the benefits of composting, to how to help conserve energy in your home and workplace. A kid zone will be available where the whole family can have some fun and learn what green is all about. For more information visit
