Events in the Western Cape – January / February 2011

The J&B Met: This annual event is held in 2011 on the 29th of January at the Kenilworth Race Course in Cape Town. The stage is set for a record day in every respect. The R2 million J&B Met is one of South Africa’s biggest summer racing, fashion and entertainment occasions and Africa’s hottest horseracing event. A crowd of 50,000 people is expected and the demand for space is always exceptional. Facilities at the J&B Met include a 5,000 capacity marquee village and 184 picnic sites. The J&B Met has its roots in the late 1700’s when Lord Charles Somerset governed the Cape and those in his garrison raced each other as a popular pastime in the area now known as Green Point common. In the late 1800’s a more suitable venue was designated to stage these races. 1883 marked the first official horseracing event at Kenilworth. The star social attraction of the years to come arose: the Metropolitan Handicap. For more information about this event visit
