Events in the Western Cape – July 2010

The Stellenbosch Wine Festival: This event is held from 1 – 5 July 2010. Thousands of local and international visitors make their way to this festival every year. The festivities include opportunities to taste over 500 wines, to meet winemakers and to watch professional chefs compete in cooking competitions. Several wine farms are participating. Other highlights include historical tours, food, arts and crafts, related product and foods stalls. There’s also a children’s entertainment area. It’s the 9th annual edition of the Stellenbosch Wine Festival this year. This is a chance to visit and experience SA’s first and foremost wine route. The route is rich in diverse wine estates and cellars. You can park your car at any of the allocated Park-and-Ride areas or visit the Info Centre at Doornbosch in Stellenbosch to purchase your festival pass and catch a shuttle to the wine farms of your choice. A festival pass costs R150 per person per day and includes 5 vouchers that can be redeemed for various experiences and festival offerings. Golden Pass tickets cost R500 and are valid for the entire duration of the festival. Kids under the age of 18 go free. Berg River Canoe Marathon: This 4 day event covers a distance of over 250km from Paarl all the way to Velddrif. The Berg River Canoe Marathon is a hard race and not for the faint at heart. On Tuesday the 13th of July a time trial is held to determine the starting positions of the top 60 paddlers. The 2010 Berg River Canoe marathon will take place from the 14th of July to the 17th of July. This event has been held since 1961. It is an extremely tough challenge, taking place over four days and covering 227 kilometres, making it the longest race in South Africa. Besides this, it’s held in the winter. And don’t forget about the tricky nature of the river. It’s one of the flagship events on the SA Canoeing calendar. For more information visit
