Events in the Western Cape – July 2011

Delheim Mushroom Week: This event is held in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape from the 4th of July to the 8th of July 2011. If field mushrooms fill you with fear or Shiitake cuisine is a distant dream then this is an opportunity to kickstart your knowledge of these delectable exotics. The Delheim restaurant (on the Knorhoek Rd off the R44) will offer a selection of wild and exotic mushroom dishes paired with the Delheim wines. Information about, and examples of, exciting varieties will be on display at the restaurant. A few lucky guests will receive a recipe kit, complete with a bottle of Delheim wine and a punnet of Nouvelle mushrooms. The mushroom dishes will be priced at R120 per head (with an extra special offering of the prized Boletus Edulis for R200 on the Friday). For bookings phone 0218884607.

Berg River Canoe Marathon: This event is held from 12 to 16 July 2011. This is the event on the WCCU racing calendar and the flagship event. The 4 day Berg River Canoe Marathon event covers a distance of over 250 km from Paarl to Velddrif. Its a hard race and definitely not for the feint hearted. On the Tuesday a time trial is held to determine the starting positions of the top 60 paddlers. The Berg River Canoe Marathon has been contested since 1961. It is an extremely tough challenge. Its the longest race of its kind in South Africa. On top of this, it takes place in winter. The weather can be a fierce opponent, not to mention the tricky nature of the river. The river’s water tends to be fast-flowing, but the channels are narrow and overhanging trees give another angle to the test. Fore more information visit http://www.windhoekberg.co.za/.
