Events in the Western Cape – May 2011

Franschhoek Literary Festival: This event is held in Franschhoek in the Western Cape from the 13th to the 15th of May 2011. For 3 days this town will become a bustling get-together of readers, writers, booksellers and publishers. This year’s event will feature a line-up of writers, discussions, poetry, literary breakfasts, plays and interviews. The visiting authors have been selected for their exceptional writing, their approachability and their passion for promoting reading. The Franschhoek Literary Festival was started in 2007 by a committee of 6 volunteers who aimed to create a festival of mostly English-speaking local writers, with a few coming from overseas. The ultimate goal was to raise funds for a new community library where it is most needed. They weren’t sure if 50 or 500 people would come – and well over a 1,000 seats were sold. Tickets for all events, including classical concerts and restaurant events, are available from the Franschhoek Wine Valley & Tourist Association. Honey & Hounds Woman’s Brunch: This event is held on the 14th of May at Kirstenbosch in Cape Town (from 09H30 to 12H00) in aid of the SPCA Cape of Good Hope at The Silver Tree Restaurant, Kirstenbosch. The brunch is in combination with the launch of Honey Fashion Accessories’ new Adore range, which includes beautiful costume jewellery, hand bags as well as sunglasses. It’s a first-of-its-kind event and promises to be absolutely fun-filled. All profit on ticket sales as well as 25% of the profit on accessory sales will be donated to the SPCA Cape of Good Hope. Guests will enjoy a delicious breakfast and receive a stunning Honey accessory piece at the function. Guests also stand a chance of winning one of several Honey Fashion Accessories Gift Vouchers. A total of a R1,000 will be given away in the form of these vouchers. Tickets cost R180 per person (which includes your brunch as well as your Kirstenbosch entry fee).
