According to Wikipedia. Father’s day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s day. It was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After Sonora heard a sermon in the town about Mother’s Day, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them. At first the tradition didn’t attract much attention. After studying, Sonora returned to Spokane in 1930 and reignited the tradition. She promoted the day at national level and was supported by, for example, the manufacturers of ties and tobacco pipes.
After 2 failed attempts to have the day made a National Day, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in 1966 in the United States.
Many countries followed the tradition of a celebration of Fathers, Fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society. Sunday, 15 June 2014 is Father’s day.
Making the weekend extra special is the Youth Day public holiday on Monday, 16 June.
