Where to find property to rent in South Africa

For some, looking for property to rent is fun, but for others, it’s an excruciatingly painful experience, one that has been likened to pulling nails, or wrestling Chuck Norris.  Finding your new home all depends on which side of the fence you happen to fall… Some go about it the right way, some go about it in the only way they can, and then there are those that go about it completely the wrong way. To make sure you fall firmly under the category of ‘the right way’ I have compiled this short, “how to” guide, which will make finding a house or flat to rent as painless as it’s possible to get.

Our Advice

property-to-rent-in-South-AfricaThe first rule of house hunting also happens to be the most important rule. Never go over-budget. In fact, you should always try your hardest to stay under-budget. The biggest problem in searching for a new rental is all the hidden costs. Things such as rental fees and deposits soon eat into your wallet and if you’re not careful, you’ll spend the first month in your new home eating nothing but toast and two minute noodles.

The second rule of house hunting involves the tiniest amounts of research. Your will need to have a look at the different areas you will want to live in. You will also need to know how close your flat is to various amenities and how far you will want to travel to get to work. After all, who actually wants to spend hours and hours in rush hour traffic? So if you are wondering where to find property to rent in South Africa, make sure you look at the places close to your work.

Thirdly, you will need to decide if you want to rent directly from the owner of the home or if you would prefer to rent though an agent. Luckily for you, Junk Mail allows you to choose and if you prefer one or the other, or if you really don’t mind, the Junk Mail website will allow you to filter out certain results so you always end up with the perfect match. That being said, if you do choose to rent through an agency, you should always make sure you find a reputable one. There have been many stories of agents making off with deposits, never to be heard from again.

Follow the Rules

If you follow these simple rules, you should be able to find the perfect home. If you don’t find the perfect home, you can always move out and find a new one, which is one of the biggest advantages of renting a house instead of buying. So, if you are looking for property to rent, make sure you follow this advice or you could end up spending years in a home you absolutely hate.
