What is the Joburg Art Fair all about?
The FNB Johannesburg Art Fair is an annual event that has been running for nine years. Artlogic was founded in 2008 and since then the initiative has been dedicated to creating sustainability in the art industry. Venue and Ticket Information
Located in South Africa’s financial capital, the Fair is situated in the midst of a thriving art scene. The FNB Johannesburg Art Fair attracts attention from both the local and international art community. The event is an opportunity for dialogues and exchanges that extend past the world of arts. The Fair leads ‘Joburg Art Week’ which features a diverse range of events. During this week there are workshops as well as debates.
This much anticipated event will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre. The event takes place from the 9th to the 11th September. Opening times are from 12pm till 8pm on Friday, 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.
Tickets cost R100 for Friday and R130 for a day pass on Saturday or Sunday. A weekend pass is priced at R 260. School groups can pre-arrange to attend the event at R15 per learner. FNB is the main sponsor of the Fair.
What to expect at the Johannesburg Art Fair this September
This year you can expect to see 90 exhibitions. Each art exhibition falls under one of the six categories which include contemporary art as well as special projects. The Special Project program shines a spotlight on art from East Africa. In this section you can expect to see art exhibitions from top artists extending from Kampala to Bujumbura and Nairobi.
A feature of the 2016 Johannesburg Art Fair is Wangechi Muti who comes from Kenya and the USA. You can also expect to see an art exhibition by Aida Muluneh from Ethiopia. Work by Jim Chuchu, Serge Alain Nitegeka and Sanaa Gateja will also be on display.
An exciting new addition to this year’s Fair is TEDx Johannesburg Talks. With discussions around contemporary African art these talks will be led by Ogogiii magazine. The TEDx Johannesburg Talks will be held at the Theatre on the Square which is situated at Nelson Mandela Square. The talks follow a full day schedule which features talented artists as well as curators.
