Tomorrow, 18 July 2009, is Madiba’s 91st birthday. Nelson Mandela, affectionately call Mandiba was born on 18 July 1918 in the Transkei. His given name is Rolihlahla. He was given the English name Nelson when he went to school. In his early life, Madiba was a prominent part of the anti-apartheid struggle, a key member of the ANC and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe.
He spent 27 years (out of a life sentence) in prison for “acts of terrorism” the greater part of which he was on Robben Island. After the ban on the ANC was lifted he was released from prison on 11 February 1990. He became the president of the ANC in 1991 and the president of South Africa in 1994. He was the first truly democratically elected president of the RSA, as well as our first black president. He retired at 1999 and did not stand for re-election.
He remained active in promoting humanitarianism, with special attention to the AIDS pandemic. From 2001 on he was less active publicly due to health concerns.
