How to choose the right garage doors for your home

A garage door is something that you can’t really do without in South Africa these days. This is because South Africans love their cars and want to keep them safe. Nothing does this better than parking your car in a secure garage. It’s quite easy to decide on the type and size of your garage, but when it comes to finding the perfect garage doors for sale, it becomes a bit confusing. There are so many garage doors on the market, from aluminium to wooden garage doors, manual to automatic, it’s not the easiest decision to make. To help you out, here are some of the different kinds of garage doors you can find out there, and what to consider when buying.

  • Roller shutter doors

These are the most common garage doors that you will see in South Africa. This is mainly due to the limited space that is needed to operate the door and the cheaper costs involved in manufacturing it. These doors are normally made from either strips of metal or a single sheet of corrugated steel. The corrugation gives the door strength from the elements and other impacts. The roll up garage doors work by feeding off a large roller. The garage door rolls up or wraps around this rotating drum when the door is opened. Due to the way the door works, it doesn’t take up too much space in the ceiling. Also the door moves straight up and down so you don’t need much space to operate it either.

  • Overhead Sectional Garage Door

Overhead sectional doors work with separate panels that’s are attached together horizontally. These panels tilt as the door is moved up or down and the sections slot together into the garage’s ceiling. These basically have the same benefits as roller shutter doors as they work the same but they are more expensive being made from multiple parts. This, however, also makes them cheaper to repair as you can swop out one or two panels as opposed to replacing the entire door.

  • Tilt-Up Garage Doors

Tilt up’s, or up-and-over garage doors, differ from the rest of the door styles as these work with one single door that swings out into the driveway before it moves up into the ceiling of the garage.

The benefit here is that these doors are much safer than others as they are one solid piece. They also last longer as the door itself doesn’t have any moving parts. The drawbacks are that you need more space to operate this door, and it’s more expensive because of its manufacturing costs and solid structure that needs extra room for transport.

  • Manual or electric

Garage doors can become very irritating if you have to get out of your car to open and close the door every time. To combat this, garage doors can be automated with a motor that opens and closes the door at the push of a button. This is obviously a massive advantage over a manual door.

The reason why you might want to opt for a manual door is that automation systems can be expensive – they use electricity when operating and need constant maintenance to keep running smoothly.

There are many garage door materials out there, each with its own pro’s and con’s. These garage door materials vary from wood to aluminium and steel fiberglass. All have different prices and applications.

  • Wooden Garage Doors

Wood is aesthetically pleasing and, in terms of design, matches a wide variety of homes. It can also be cheaper than most material, depending on the type of wood used to build the door. Wood is a natural material so it is subject to moisture and heat. This means that it can crack or become damaged with age. You also have to keep the door painted and varnished to keep it protected, so there is a higher maintenance cost associated with this material.

  • Aluminium Garage Doors

Aluminium doors are sturdy and strong. They can withstand quite a lot of battering from the elements. They are lightweight and don’t rust very easily. The drawback here is the price. As far as garage doors prices go, they can be quite expensive.

  • Steel Garage Doors

Steel is a very strong material. It’s just as durable as Aluminium. They don’t need constant maintenance and withstand weather very well. The problem with steel doors is that they are very heavy. If you have a manual garage door then lifting it up every time can become an issue.

  • Fiberglass Garage Doors

Fiberglass is the lightest material used to build garage doors. It’s also very strong and can take any kind of weather condition that can be thrown at it. They are however the most expensive to manufacture.

  • Garage Door Installation Considerations

There are some things to consider when finding garage doors for sale. From the above mentioned information you will obviously have to consider the type of material that you will want to use. This would have a lot to do with how much you are looking to spend.

The size of your garage will come into play as this will define what kind of mechanism you will use on the door and if you have space for an electric motor for the automation of the door. You will also have to consider whether or not you want it to be insulated. Insulated doors will mean less heat being lost through the door. The issue here is that insulation is expensive. Depending on the weather of the area you are living in, you might have to insulate the garage door to keep down heating costs.

There are two different types of garage door springs used on sectional doors: torsion and side mounted spring. When the door is close, the garage door spring tension is high, when the door is open, the pressure drops.
