The 2014 celebration ‘offers an opportunity to refocus on the role of families in development; take stock of recent trends in family policy development; share good practices in family policy making; review challenges faced by families worldwide and recommend solutions’, according to the United Nations website.

According to the programme, Families are the ‘basic core of society’. The Day gives society around the world the opportunity to create awareness of issues families might experience and also to better the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic effects on families.

The follow-up processes of the major UN conferences and summits around family-issues in the 1990s are still providing policy guidelines on how to enforce family-centred components of these policies and programmes in its role in development.
