What is the Midmar Mile?
Every year swimmers from across South Africa meet to compete in the Midmar Mile. This much anticipated annual race takes place at Midmar Dam which is a short drive to the north of Pietermaritzburg. Thousands of competitors enter the race.
The event is attended by both recreational swimmers and top performing athletes. Spectators can expect to see international athletes swimming in this event.
This swimming event was awarded the Guinness Book of World Records title for being the largest open water swimming event in 2009. There were 13 755 swimmers in the 2009 race. The event itself acquired its name from its location as well as the distance that the competitors have to complete.
While the distance is typically 1.6 kms, the distance changes according to rainfall levels. If there has been low levels of rainfall, competitors have to run across mud before the water becomes deep enough to start swimming.
To accommodate the high amount of entrants eight different races are held. In addition to holding separate races the swimmers are also divided into five groups with separate starting times within each race. The groups are determined by each competitor’s time during the qualifying event.
The Midmar Mile takes over two days in February. The Midmar mile 2016 is scheduled to take place on 13th and 14th February.
