The great news is that Disney is going to release a prequel for this film in June or July 2013. The upcoming film will be called Monsters University and will re-unite the same cast from the first movie. John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Jennifer Tilly, Frank Oz and John Ratzenberger will all lend their voices to the characters in the upcoming film. The late James Coburn will be replaced by the highly capable Kelsey Grammer (who you might remember from television’s Frasier and Cheers).
Monsters University is set 10 years before the events of Monsters Inc. In the film James P. Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) meet in college and they plan to become scarers at Monsters, Inc. Monsters University also explains that the two friends were once rivals but soon became best friends.
The film is directed by Dan Scanlon (who also directed the 2009 film Tracy). The screenplay for the film was written by Pete Docter (who also worked on Monsters Inc.) and Andrew Stanton. Monsters University will be the fourteenth film released by Pixar animated studios. This 3D Animated film is highly anticipated and could easily become one of the biggest blockbusters at the movie box office in 2013.
A teaser trailer was released by Disney in June 2012, check it out below:
