National Braai Team to represent South Africa in the United States

South African icon Braaiboy and his team co-captain Borries will be heading off to the USA in October this year to compete in the exclusive World Food Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada and the Jack Daniel’s World Barbeque Invitational in Lynchburg,Tennessee. The South African National braai team (officially known as Team Chesa Nyama Braai-B-Que) have been afforded the rights to officially represent our country at both these amazing events.

Braaiboy entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 2012 for the world’s longest continuous braai (62 hours) and has been documenting his challenge to braai every single day online since the 17th of April 2009.  Borries recently won the popular Bring & Braai competition on DStv’s kykNET and brings much needed knowledge to the team. The team will consist of a total of 8 South Africans and have been looking forward to finding some superior braai specialists at the regional competitions to be part of their team.

Four team spaces were put up for grabs at four different regional “braai-offs” (which have been taking place throughout August 2013) at selected Chesa Nyama stores. The top three contestants from each region earn the chance to compete at the final” braai-off” on the 7th of September.  The local “braai-offs” test entrants’ knowledge on their own choice of meat for the coals, preparation of a sauce from scratch, and a final challenge of all preparing the same cut of meat with the sauce created in the second challenge. The team captains have perfected their ‘smoking’ know-how on the Weber Smokey Mountain and with the generous support of Weber in both South Africa and the United States, they will be up to the task.

Braaiboy and Borries are looking forward to compete against the Americans and challenging them in their own backyard and they cherish the opportunity to show them what South Africans do best. South Africa is a braai nation after all. Team Chesa Nyama Braai-B-Que is scheduled to leave for Lynchburg, Tennessee on the 21st of October 2013 and will travel the 2,000 miles (over 3,200 km) between the two competitions in RV’s. This will allow the team to braai every day during their trip and spread a little South African culture along the way.

The National Braai Team braai-offs have already taken place at the Chesa Nyama stores in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom. The next braai-off takes place this weekend (the 31st of August 2013) at the store at Brakpan’s Carnival Mall on the East Rand and the South African National Braai Team will be chosen and announced at the finals on the 7th of September at at the Chesa Nyama  store in Rosebank. Entries to the competition are available at Chesa Nyama stores nationwide and online.
