What is recycling and why is it important?

So, what is recycling? It refers to reusing disposable materials for a new purpose. It is important to include e-waste recycling, which refers to reusing electronic waste, such as televisions and computers. If you take your disposable materials to your local recycling collection point, they will typically be reduced to their raw form and then transformed into a new product. You can also reuse material by starting your own recycling projects.

Why is recycling important? Recycling is important because the natural resources on earth are limited and it is important to not only use it in the most efficient way possible, but also to reuse it. Not only does it have an impact on our lives, it can also change the lives of future generations for the better. When you start focusing your attention on reducing waste, you are likely to evaluate your shopping habits.

Being mindful of the products that you are buying and how much waste each product generates has been shown to reduce spending and incur significant savings. For companies, recycling initiatives can help to portray the values of their brands.

In the case of larger organisations, reusing waste can encourage team building, problem solving and it can also add some fun and a sense of purpose to the working environment. Another positive outcome is that it creates jobs. Waste increases pollution levels and if we want to live in a healthy environment, reusing disposable materials is essential.

What should be recycled?

Glass, paper, tins and plastic are common recyclable materials. Over 60% of our waste can be recycled and recycled paper offers a 70% decrease in pollution when compared to new paper. If left in a landfill, plastic takes more than 500 years to break down and glass does not break down on its own.

80% of vehicles can be reused in some way or form, while glass is 100% recyclable. Approximately 16% of product costs are spent on packaging. Some packaging may even be labelled to let you know that it can be recycled.

Don’t leave out e-waste recycling, which is the recycling and reuse of electronic goods. E-waste is valuable when it is reused and it is often toxic if it is not disposed of correctly. You can avoid this problem by reselling electronics that are still in working order or by donating them. Contact your local recycling services to find out what materials can be recycled in your area.
