World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed annually on 8 May. The day is marked as a celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international movement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members and staff world-wide. The institutions were founded to protect human life and health and to alleviate human suffering.
8 May is also the anniversary of the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize.
