Who is OneRepublic?
Hailing from Colorado Springs, Colorado, OneRepublic is an American Pop Rock band formed back in 2002 by Zach Filkins and Ryan Tedder. The true origin of this chart topping band however starts way back in 1996.
Tedder and Filkins, who attended the same high school in Colorado Springs, was discussing their favourite musicians on a drive home. They were inspired and decided to start their own band – This Beautiful Mess. With the help of musical friends, This Beautiful Mess performed a couple of gigs and, when graduation swung around, Tedder and Filkins parted ways, attending different colleges.
Fast-forward to 2002, Tedder and Filkins formed OneRepublic and relocated to Los Angeles. They later recruited Eddie Fisher (drummer from 2005 replacing Jerrod Bettis), Drew Brown (keyboardist) and Brent Kutzle (bassist and cellist from 2007 onwards, replacing Tim Myers).
Signing with Sony BMG’s Columbia label in 2003, the band worked hard, but by 2005, on a return from a performance at Coachella, the group learned that they had been dropped by their label.
Despite being dropped, the band has a huge following on MySpace. This popularity was further boosted by Ryan Tedder’s song writing skills, penning songs for artist like Hilary Duff and Blake Lewis.
Hip-hop producer, Timbaland, who had already worked with Ryan Tedder for a number of years, noticed the band’s audience and signed the band to his Mosley Music Group, a joint venture with Interscope Records.
‘Apologize’ was remixed and included on Timbaland’s own 2007 album – Timbaland Presents Shock Value. ‘Apologize’ took off and reached platinum-selling single success in a number of countries. It broke airplay records in the United Kingdom and sold 4.3 million digital downloads in the United States alone.
2007 also saw this alternative rock band release their own album – Dreaming Out Loud – filled with pop-rock melodies and stunning piano-filled song writing. Needless to say, the album quickly went Gold with ‘Apologize’ still topping Singles Charts in a number of countries.
The album also earned OneRepublic a Grammy nomination and achieved number one success in 16 countries.
Ryan Tedder became one of the most celebrated song writers of 2007 with his track ‘Bleeding Love’ for Leona Lewis also achieving great success.
In 2008, this alternative rock band started writing new songs for their second album, later escaping to Colorado Springs to avoid distraction. In September 2009 the album’s lead single. ‘Waking Up’ hit radios and by November we were swept off our feet by the complete album, ‘Waking Up’.
The band returned in 2013 with their third studio album – Native. Also the title of the band’s world tour, featuring the singles ‘If I Lose Myself’ and ‘Feel Again’.
