About Potchefstroom

Fondly nicknamed Potch, Potchefstroom was the first town established north of the Vaal River and has a history dating back to 1838. Today a university town about 250 000 people call home, Potchefstroom has a vibrant student life, Die Bult – which hosts a series of restaurants and pubs – being a popular hangout of students.

A stunning town on its own, Potchefstroom offers all the necessities and more. MooiRiver Mall is home to around 100 stores and students and residents of the town can enjoy everything from productions at the Sanlam Auditorium, a visit to the North-West University Botanical Gardens and the Potchefstroom Museum (and a number of other museums), to name but a few attractions.

Another big annual event that most certainly deserves a mention is the Aardklop National Arts Festival.

Remember that Potchefstroom is (when you have to walk everywhere) quite a big town, so there are a couple of things to keep in mind when choosing your accommodation.

  • Distance from the campus: If you have your own transportation, this shouldn’t be too much of a worry, but do keep fuel prices in mind. If you do not have your own transportation, make sure that you are as close to the campus as possible. Because there are so many students, finding a lift to class shouldn’t be difficult, but keep in mind that class schedules differ.
  • Renting an apartment: If you are renting an apartment or bachelor flat, you will have to consider rent and utility costs. Because you are ‘running a house’ you will have to consider everything from your electricity bill and food costs, to cleaning supplies and rent payments. If you have an apartment with more than one room, try to find a roommate that help carry the costs.
  • Renting a room: If you are opting for rooms to rent in Potchefstroom, try to find a room in a house where some students might be enrolled in the same programmes as you – this might be a little bit more difficult, but it can help with situations like transport arrangements. Also keep in mind that, if you are renting a room, you will be sharing facilities like bathrooms, kitchens and general areas like the living room.
