The 2010 FIFA World Cup Quarter Finals kick off on Friday

Since the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicked off on the 11th of June 2010 at Soccer City in Johannesburg it has been a wild rollercoaster ride consisting of world-class football in South Africa. 58 matches have been played in the tournament (at a rate of between 2 and 4 a day) since the tournament started. Today and Yesterday was set aside as rest days for players in teams that have made it into the quarter final stage of the tournament. Only 8 teams remain in the tournament (out of the initial 32). It’s hard to believe that there are only 8 matches left in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Quarter Final matches will be played on the 2nd and 3rd of July. After this, only 4 teams will remain in the tournament.

The following matches will be played in the quarter final stage in the tournament:

  • The Netherlands vs Brazil @ Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth, 2 July 2010: This promises to be one of the most exciting matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Brazil is currently ranked at number 1 on the FIFA rankings. Brazil managed to advance out of Group G (also known as the “Group of Death”). The South Americans beat Cote D’Ivoire and North Korea and played to a goal-less draw against Portugal in the group stage of the tournament. In the 2nd round Brazil convincingly beat South American rivals Chile by 3 goals to 0 to ensure their place in the quarter finals. Brazil have won the FIFA World Cup 5 times (more than any other nation) and will be looking to get a 6th title under their belt. The Netherlands beat Denmark, Japan and Cameroon in their Group E matches to advance to the 2nd round. The beat Slovakia (who had caused an upset by knocking out 4 times FIFA World Cup winners Italy) by 2 goals to 1 in their 2nd round match to advance to the quarter final stage of the tournament. The Netherlands is currently ranked at number 4 on the FIFA rankings. They’ve played in 2 previous FIFA World Cup finals (in 1974 and 1978) but have never won the FIFA World Cup. They will be looking for their first title. This quarter final match kicks off at 16:00.
  • Uruguay vs Ghana @ Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg, 2 July 2010: Ghana are playing their 2nd FIFA World Cup in history. They are the only team from Africa left in the competition. Nigeria, South Africa, Cote D’Ivoire and Cameroon failed to make it into the 2nd round stage of the tournament. Ghana are currently ranked 32nd on the FIFA rankings. Ghana beat Serbia and played to a draw against Australia in the group stage of the tournament. Despite losing to Germany in their group D match they managed to make it into 2nd round. They beat the USA by 2 goals to 1 in their second round match in Rustenburg. It’s the 2nd time in FIFA World Cup history that an African team has made it into the quarter final stage of the FIFA World Cup. Uruguay will be looking to win their 3rd FIFA World Cup in 60 years. They last won the tournament in Brazil in 1950. Uruguay are currently ranked 16th on the FIFA rankings. They played to a draw against France, beat South Africa and beat Mexico in their group matches to reach the 2nd round. They won their 2nd round match against South Korea to reach the quarter finals. This quarter final match kicks of at 20:30.
  • Argentina vs Germany @ Cape Town Stadium, 3 July 2010: Argentina is currently ranked 7th on the FIFA rankings. Argentina have won the FIFA World Cup twice, in 1978 (when they hosted the tournament) and 1986 (in Mexico). Argentina beat Nigeria, South Korea and Greece in their Group B matches to progress to the 2nd round of the tournament. They knocked out Mexico in their 2nd round match, beating them by 3 goals to 1. They’re currently the top scoring team in the tournament. Germany is currently ranked 6th on the FIFA rankings. The Germans are looking for their 4th FIFA World Cup title. They won the competition in 1954, 1974 and 1990. They are FIFA World Cup veterans (playing in their 17th tournament). Germany beat Australia and Ghana in their group D matches. They progressed to the 2nd round despite having lost to Serbia in Port Elizabeth. They met England in their 2nd round encounter in Bloemfontein and convincingly beat them by 4 goals to 1. Germany are definately one of the favorites to win the tournament. This quarter final match kicks off at 16:00.
  • Paraguay vs Spain @ Coca Cola Park Stadium, Johannesburg, 3 July 2010: Paraguay are currently ranked 31st on the FIFA rankings. This is the nation’s 7th FIFA World Cup and it’s the first time that they’ve made it into the quarter final stage of a tournament. Paraguay played to a draw in their matches against Italy and New Zealand and won their match against Slovakia in the group stages of the tournament. In the 2nd round they met Japan at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The match ended in a goal-less draw, but Paraguay beat Japan 5-3 in a penalty shootout to advance to the quarter final stage of the tournament. Spain advanced to the 2nd round of the tournament despite losing against Switzerland for the first time in history in one of their group matches. They recovered, winning their last 2 matches in their group (beating Honduras and Chile). Spain met neighbors Portugal in their 2nd round match in Durban and beat them by 1 goal to 0 to reach the quarter final stage of the tournament. This quarter final match kicks off at 20:30.
