YouTube Turns 7 Years Old!

YouTubeThe popular video sharing website, YouTube turned 7 years old on the 21st of May 2012 (earlier this week). YouTube was founded in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees (Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim). The company is based in San Bruno, California. For those of you who did not know, YouTube uses Adobe Flash Video and HTML5 technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content (including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging and short original videos).

The domain name “www.youtube.com” was activated on the 14th of Februay 2005 and the website was developed over the subsequent months. The first YouTube video was entitled “Me at the zoo”, and featured co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo. The video was uploaded on the 23rd of April 2005 and can still be viewed on the site. When YouTube was officially launched in December 2005 users were watching 8 million videos per day. In July 2006 the number has increased to 100 million videos being watched per day.

YouTube has truly become an essential part of the internet. This especially escalated after November 2006 (when YouTube was bought by Google for $1.65 billion). The website has been operating as a subsidiary of Google since then. By October 2009 1 Billion videos were being viewed a day on YouTube. By the time of October 2011 over 800 million visitors were using YouTube monthly. By the end of January 2012 4 billion videos were being viewed daily on YouTube. Most recent figures (released in May 2012) points out that 72 hours of Video is now being uploaded on YouTube every minute.

YouTube released this video to celebrate their 7th Birthday earlier this week. Check out for some more YouTube statistics:
