Home Improvement Ideas with some Colour
Inspired by the Homemakers Expo, the Junk Mail team wanted to highlight some great home improvement ideas that can help you breathe new life into your home. Here, we wanted to focus on DIY projects that will transform your living space, stopping short of knocking out a wall.
A fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference, so take a chance, make an investment and play with some colour.
The first obvious place to start is on the exterior of your home. Choose a colour that compliments your house’s overall design, the garden and who you are as a person. Remember, a well maintained home is worth more.
Next, why not add some funk and pizazz to your home by creating a feature (sometimes also called an accent) wall? Using colours, you can create a stunning wall, creating a vocal point that will blow people away (and add a touch of modern style to your home).
Thinking of replacing your gate? Why not make a statement by choosing something beautifully unique and adding some style at the same time. Security is a part of our daily lives, but it doesn’t mean that our homes have to look like prisons. South Africa offers a range of stunning options, so explore a little more by reading the Make a statement by choosing the right gates for your home post.
Pinterest is a great place for ideas surrounding home improvement, especially for inspiration surrounding interior design ideas. For the bedroom, why not choose a wall and create fun focus. A feature wall in the bedroom, using soft colours, are guaranteed to add a touch of style and sophistication.
Wallpaper is also an easy way to transform a drab room into a fab living space. Remember to be fun and daring. Choose a design that suits both your personal tastes and as well as your furniture. From the office to the bathroom, wallpaper is a great and easy way to create a feature wall.
Another popular interior design trend over the last couple of years is using different colours to highlight different walls. Adding a fun and modern vibe to a living space, you can either go all out by painting each wall a different colour, or just highlight a specific object, bookcase or accessory on the wall by adding a box of colour around it.
Top Tip: There are some great Apps out there that can help you actually visualise your home before even one brush touches the wall. A great example of this includes the Dulux Visualiser App. There are raving reviews on this particular app.

Interior Design Ideas to Brighten Your Home
Because we love all things interior design, our team also wanted to highlight some gorgeous ideas that will definitely inspire you to create.
The latest trend we are absolutely in love with is creating wall art, your family and loved ones taking centre stage. There are stunning home decor ideas surrounding this theme.
If you are looking to create a rustic look, this idea might be perfect for you. By simply taking a branch (painting it a colour is up to you), use string or fish line to connect photos to each other (in a downwards line). Take your completed strings, hang them from the branch and voila – a beautiful rustic frame without the boring frame.
Another one of the many home improvement ideas we absolutely adore is creating a feature wall (using just about any colour you want) and using that wall to showcase your family photos. While some people go for a plain background, others choose to get creative, painting the outlines of a tree for example and then adding your photo frames.
Remember to get creative. A wall photo collage doesn’t have to be in symmetrical order or perfectly aligned. Sometimes the most random combination can look absolutely stunning.
There are also some smaller projects you can take on to help you give your home a new look and feel. Chandeliers are a beautiful way to help you shine some new light onto a room. Here you can go old-school, adding a classically designed chandelier, or go ultra-modern by adding something a little different and unique.
When it comes to interior design, don’t be afraid of experimentation, even if it seems odd. While most people would think of adding a chandelier to the dining room for example, it can be a beautiful interior decorating asset in the bathroom.
A chandelier made of Mason Jars are also a great idea – for the kitchen or even an outdoor space.
Don’t be afraid to play around with lighting ideas. We highlight some great ideas in or Home Decor Ideas – Amazing lighting ideas with Fairy Lights post, so check it out.
Apart from being able to transform the exterior of your home, paint can do a world of good to old, worn furniture. From making use of bright colours to take an old piece of furniture to new heights, paint can also be used to make a simple side table look like a farm styled vintage masterpiece.
Windows are another important aspect that should form part of your interior decorating endeavours. Never underestimate the power plantation shutters or a bamboo blind can have on your home. From the kitchen and bathroom, to your bedroom and living room, blinds are an easy option if you are looking for home decor ideas that will add a subtle touch of beauty.
