Scam Alert: Be on the lookout!

We would like to send this urgent Scam Alert to our users and to ask that you be on the lookout when trading. We’ve had reports of someone advertising items with the sole purpose of scamming users out of their hard-earned money. Junk Mail would like to reiterate the following to our users after it was found that the eBay / Moneygram scammers have again been very active:

  • We do not have ‘Verified Traders’ on Junk MailScam Alert
  • Be very wary of an advertiser if they are unable to showcase the item for sale before purchase
  • If the deal seems too good to be true, it most probably is
  • If the seller seems very urgent, be careful

If you responded on an advertised item (vehicles especially) and receive the below response, rather start looking for another vehicle on Junk Mail.

These scammers mostly make use of …@aol.com e-mail addresses.

Their modus operandi is always as per the below message: ‘Good day, Thank you for your interest. The price is R34,000. This is the final price and there will be no additional charges. The car looks and runs great. First of all I am selling the car so cheap because I am in United Kingdom with my new job and I just finished a divorce. I will stay here for 3 years so this is the reason why I want to sell the car. I am a Verified Trader so the transaction will be done through eBay so we can both be protected. If you’re ready for this purchase, I need to know your full name and address for delivery because as soon as I have them I will start the official procedure and eBay will notify you about this. eBay will send you an Invoice with all the info you need to complete the transaction. Also a 10 days refund policy will be included so if you will not like the car or if something will be wrong you will receive your money back in the same day without any charges from your side. Thanks’

Remember: Sharing in Caring. If you have been a victim of a scam or if you have picked up a scam that is not listed on our blog, please report the scam to our Customer Care Department. This can be done telephonically on 012 3423840 ext. 2295 or via e-mail at scam@junkmail.co.za.
