Gautrain Tariffs Announced

Yesterday Gautrain officials announced that regular commuters will receive discounts for monthly and weekly tickets.

Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi announced the new fares that will come into effect in July 2011. The route between Johannesburg and Pretoria is expected to be ready on the 1st of July 2011.

Gautrain fares have been set at a rate which officials believe is competitive and affordable, in an attempt to lower the amount of motorists on the roads. Commuters will have the option to purchase single, weekly or monthly tickets. Monthly tickets will be sold at a 20 percent discount and weekly tickets will be sold at a 10 percent discount. Monthly ticket holders will only pay R39 for a one-way trip between Hatfield (in Pretoria) and Johannesburg Park Station.

A single trip between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton, which is currently R100, will increase to R105 when the train system is fully operational. A trip from Pretoria Station / Centurion / Hatfield Station to OR Tambo will cost R125 and a trip from Johannesburg Park Station to OR Tambo will cost R115.

To date 2.7 million passengers have used the 1st phase of the Gautrain service between Sandton station and OR Tambo International airport since it was introduced in June 2010.
