About Melrose House Museum
Commissioned by George Heys and designed by WT Vale, Melrose House was erected in 1880 and named after Melrose Abbey in Scotland – a place where Heys and his wife visited on honeymoon. The house itself stayed in the Heys family until 1968 after which the then City Council of Pretoria purchased it and transformed it into a museum.
Used as the headquarters for the British during the Second Boer War, the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging was also signed here on the 31st of May, 1902. With its structure remaining unaltered, it was restored between 1990 and 1992, and today still features some of the original décor including the couch house where you can find George Heys’ Minerva.
Boasting Victorian design styles and décor, the Melrose House also showcases the transition to Edwardian design styles and architecture. Gilded ceilings, stained-glass and a clay tennis court are only some of the beautiful designs that can be seen at the museum.
If you can appreciate vintage furniture, antiques and architecture, or would love to learn more about South Africa and its history, Melrose House Museum is a must. Visiting the museum, you can opt to either explore the grounds on your own or organise a guided tour. Regular workshops about the Victorian era and Anglo-Boer War are also held for both the young and old.

Your article is incorrect. It was NOT the council of Tshwane that purchased the building, but the City Council of Pretoria.
Tshwane city council was not in existence at the time of the purchase (1968).
Tshwane is, in fact, a conglomeration of several municipalities that all existed far prior to 2011, one of which is Pretoria itself.
