Klein Karoo is an Afrikaans romantic comedy film set in beautiful Swartberg area (near Oudsthoorn) in the Western Cape. The film is directed by legendary South African director Regardt Van Den Bergh. Van Den Bergh directed the Vyfster TV series and Boetie Gaan Border Toe! in the 1980’s. Besides this he’s also starred in 28 films over the years. He’s definitely one of the most experienced South Africans when it comes to the film industry.
Klein Karoo features appearances by Hykie Berg, Anel Alexander, Donnalee Roberts, Tim Theron, Pierre Breytenbach, Sisanda Henna, Helene Truter, Leandie Du Randt, Bouwer Bosch, Ilse Oppelt and Amalia Uys and promises to be one of the best local films of 2013.
The film tells the story of Cybil Ferreira (a teacher from Oudsthoorn) who is willing to do anything to ensure the success of her farm school, Kalfieskraal. She dreams about establishing a center at the school to provide a safe haven for the children who live in the Swartberg Valley (who are struggling under the influence of alcoholism).
Cybil has trouble getting the project off the ground though. The land where the school is situated is for sale and none of the interested buyers or her fiancée (Meyer Labuschagne) care about it.
Frans Coetzee shows up in the area. He’s a journalist suffering from a broken heart who wants to make a documentary about community development and social upliftment in the area. He’s doing this in an attempt to forget about love, women and all the other problems that go along with both things.
Cybil and Frans meet, and both their worlds are completely turned upside down. Cybil is faced with a tough decision. Will Cybil give up on her dreams and follow her heart or will true love enable her to achieve her goal? And is Frans ready to give love another chance?
