5 tips on how to DJ

If you want to be the best DJ out there, you need to make sure you follow these five rules:

1. Play music for your audience

Play music that your audience enjoys and not what you want to necessarily play. Don’t drop a techno track at a hip hop event for example. Just because you are in the mood to hear something, don’t expect the audience to feel the same way. Test the waters and introduce different elements slowly, if the audience reacts badly then don’t do it again. Don’t be a selfish DJ.

2. Do your homework

Get to know each and every single song in your collecting like the back of your hand. You have to know exactly how fast each beat is and how you can mix them into each other successfully. There is nothing worse than a bad transition or a badly timed mix.

3. Create original bootleg remixes

If you have a song that you like or hear something that you think you can work with then take it and make it your own. Practice makes perfect and the best way to practice is to make remixes. This is also a great way to get your music out there. The reason bands play covers is because people can easily identify with the songs. This also applies when it comes to tips on how to DJ in the sense that your music will more easily be liked by those that like the original song.

4. Learn how to make a great set

In a long DJ set you want to start off slow and slowly build up the tempo. You want to transition between genres then peak and break down the set. If you get this wrong you could very well upset your audience. Transition between your songs nicely and leave no room for error, practice the set over and over until it’s perfect.

5. DJ for the thrill…not the money or fame.

If you are a DJ so you can stand in front of an audience and throw your hand in the air then you are doing it for the wrong reasons. You should feel joy from the music itself and that should be all that you need to motivate yourself. If you are enjoying the music, then other people will too. Being a DJ is also a lot of hard work and dedication and if you think you will be making money from day one, then you won’t last very long as a DJ.
